20 Parking Super Tips That Will Make Your Life Easier

Think about the last time you planned a journey that involved driving. You probably prepared by answering the most obvious questions. What address is my destination? How long will the drive be? Should I expect any traffic? Should I grab some food along the way? We’re always careful to make sure that taking to the road is as quick and comfortable an experience as possible. But, there’s one important driving ritual we easily ignore even though we shouldn’t – parking.

Parking is a process to consider seriously because it’s indispensable to any journey. It doesn’t matter where you’re going, or for how long, if you’re going to use a car you’ll need to park it somewhere in order to travel on foot. Not only can parking the wrong way eat into your time, it can also make you vulnerable to victimization if you aren’t careful to protect yourself or secure your vehicle. Here are twenty parking tips to consider the next time you plan to drive:

            While Approaching a Parking Area:

Concentrate. Just because you’ve slowed down doesn’t mean you can ignore proper safety precautions. Be observant for speed bumps, traffic signs and pedestrians. Always adhere to posted speed limits.

Choose a strategic parking spot. If you have a choice, park as close to your venue as possible in order to reduce how much time is spent leaving or approaching your vehicle. Long walking distances give potential attackers more time to stalk you.

While Exiting Your Vehicle on Foot:

Scan the area for threats or dangerous circumstances. If you notice anything that makes you feel unsafe, find somewhere better to park.

Make a note of the surrounding parking regulations and general signage. They could contain critical information.

Before exiting your vehicle, conceal any valuables or loose materials from view. Note that this doesn’t just apply to expensive possessions alone. Anything is worth breaking into your car for as long as a thief needs it. For example, a starving drifter wouldn’t hesitate to break into your vehicle if the backseat had bags of food in sight.

Before exiting your vehicle, conceal any paperwork that may be on display. For example, identity thieves wouldn’t even need to break into your vehicle in order to take advantage of mail scattered on your seat.

Lock your doors and roll up your windows.

If you need help remembering exactly where you parked in a large lot of vehicles, use the camera on your mobile device to take a photo of the specific row or level you parked on before walking away from your vehicle.

If you have a choice, wear comfortable walking shoes rather than heels. It may become necessary to hurry while on foot.

While on foot, do not wear or use technology that impedes your senses. Avoid wearing headphones or looking at screens.

Walk confidently and quickly. The less time spent on foot between your vehicle and your destination, the less vulnerable you are to assault.

If you are travelling with others, walk in groups for greater visibility and safety.

Give way to moving cars. Don’t just assume that drivers can see you even if you have the right of way. Always make sure that the coast is clear before crossing a vehicle’s path.

While Returning to Your Vehicle on Foot:

Scan the area for threats or dangerous circumstances. If you notice anything in the proximity of your vehicle that makes you feel unsafe, walk to the nearest security agent, or a more public area where you can ask for help.

Do not wear or use technology that impedes your senses. Avoid wearing headphones or looking at screens.

Walk confidently and quickly. The less time spent on foot between your vehicle and your destination, the less vulnerable you are to assault.

Before re-entering your car, scan underneath the vehicle and the backseat as well to ensure nothing unusual is happening around your car.

Make sure your keys are within reach so as not to waste time rummaging by your car.

            While Departing a Parking Area:

If you were issued a returnable receipt in order to purchase parking, make sure you have it within reach before driving off to the exit. Waiting until the exact moment your receipt has to be submitted causes unnecessary traffic.

Reverse with extreme caution. Take extreme care not to collide with pedestrians or other vehicles especially when leaving crowded venues. Be patient even though you might be in a hurry to leave.

Multitasking can feel like a superpower sometimes. There’s nothing quite like that sense of accomplishment that comes with knowing you pulled off juggling several errands simultaneously. After all, not everybody has what it takes to feed the dog and update their status while frying up an omelet in between a morning news and cardio routine. Multitasking is great in practically every area of life – except behind the wheel that is. More and more people are tragically falling victim to the perils of distracted driving thanks to a seemingly harmless desire to multitask.

Quick Guide: What the Law Says About Texting and Driving

We’ve probably all done it at some point or another. Coasting along behind the wheel when all of a sudden a faint notification chimes, prompting a quick reach for the phone to see who the new message is from. It feels like instinct, and it all sounds commonplace. However, this seemingly harmless act happens to be one of the most dangerous things a driver can do on the road. Considering the fact that a collision is three times more likely to happen when drivers are distracted, doing something as involving as checking texts while driving is hazardously negligent. So much so that California passed a law banning it in 2006.

According to the California Vehicle Code (CVC, Division 11, Chapter 12, Article 1, 23123 – 23125) it is illegal for people to drive while generally using handheld mobile devices. The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) estimates that up to 54% of drivers confess to either being hit or experiencing near misses with a driver who was texting or talking on the phone. What makes matters worse is that people easily underestimate just how much their attention is averted by using phones while driving. The OTS reports that spending a mere five seconds checking texts while traveling at the speed limit distracts a driver’s eyes long enough to cover the distance of an entire football field. Furthermore, every instance of text messaging subsequently induces a 27-second interval of distraction latency which is a period of contemplation ! predominantly focused on recent communication above anything else. All of this means that on average, at least half a minute is taken away from a driver’s concentration every time they check a text.

The specific language of the law outlines restrictions on texting and driving as follows:

A person shall not drive a motor vehicle while using, holding or operating a handheld wireless telephone, or an electronic wireless communications device, unless said device is specifically designed and configured to allow voice-operated and hands-free listening and talking, and is used in that manner while driving (CVC 23123 – 23125).

This does not apply to a person using a wireless mobile device for emergency purposes, including, but not limited to, an emergency call to a law enforcement agency, health care provider, fire department, or other emergency services agency or entity (CVC 23123 – 23125).

A handheld wireless telephone or electronic wireless communications device may be operated in a manner requiring the use of the driver’s hand while the driver is operating the vehicle only if both of the following conditions are satisfied:

The device is mounted on a vehicle’s windshield in the same manner a portable Global Positioning System (GPS) is mounted, or is affixed to a vehicle’s dashboard or center console in a manner that does not hinder the driver’s view of the road.

The driver’s hand is used to activate or deactivate a feature or function of the device with the motion of a single swipe or tap of the driver’s finger (CVC 23123 – 23125).

Persons under the age of 18 years shall not drive a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone or an electronic wireless communications device, even if equipped with hands-free accessories (CVC 23123 – 23125).

The only instance in which you should ever use a mobile device in a car is if you are contacting first responders for help in an emergency situation. If you absolutely must use your phone, pull over safely away from moving traffic, bring the vehicle to a complete stop and then proceed with your communication discretely.
Things Every Driver Should Know and Do to Survive Traffic Stops

Did you know that the single most common reason people come in contact with the police is routine traffic stops? Even an innocent driver without a blemish on their record can end up having to explain themselves to law enforcement because of an unexpected traffic incident. Understanding how to react or behave during traffic stops can prevent a simple procedure from escalating into an aggravating protracted court case. Here are six basic tips on how to make it through traffic stops:

           Know your rights:

           1. Traffic stops can end up taking time depending on the circumstances. Simple stops hardly last longer than a few minutes, whereas complicated stops can last for hours. Never depart from a traffic stop unless law enforcement has made it clear that you are free to go. If time has gone by and you’re unsure about whether to leave, ask the basic question “Officer, are you detaining me, or am I free to go?” No matter what, remember to stay calm, and stay put at the traffic stop until an officer clarifies that you are free to go. Leaving prematurely could trigger criminal charges such as resisting arr! est.

           2. Unless you or anyone in your vehicle is being put under arrest, a law enforcement officer cannot search your vehicle without a Search Warrant or Probable Cause. This means you have the right not to consent to a search. Even if your refusal doesn’t prevent law enforcement from ultimately conducting a search, it can help create a defense in your favor during future litigation assuming an illegal search and seizure was conducted.

A Search Warrant is a legal document authorizing law enforcement to enter and search a civilian’s premises for evidence of illegal activity. Search Warrants must identify the area being searched, and what specific items are to be seized.

Probable Cause refers to specific facts or conditions which make it reasonable to assume that a crime has been committed in an area being searched. For example if law enforcement can smell alcohol wafting from your vehicle during a traffic stop, they have probable cause to believe you are driving under the influence and therefore search your vehicle for open containers of alcohol.

Aside from verbal confirmation, handing over your keys to an officer also qualifies as consenting to a search.

           3. Don’t be afraid to sign a traffic ticket issued during a stop. This is because signing a ticket during a traffic stop is not an admission of guilt. The ticket issued to a driver during a traffic stop acknowledges the fact that it was issued, and nothing more. Tickets are always accompanied by a future court summons which is the appropriate time either to challenge a ticket or admit guilt.

           Do what’s Right:

Emotions can run high during a traffic stop. On one hand, drivers tend to feel stunned, anxious or frustrated at having to suddenly pull over and deal with a sensitive situation. On the other hand, law enforcement officers tend to be on high alert because of how unpredictable traffic stops are. All of this built up tension means that the best approach to take with your interaction is calmness. The more you put everyone involved at ease, the faster a traffic stop gets resolved peacefully.

           1. Follow instructions. One of the easiest ways to gain the trust of a law enforcement officer during a traffic stop is compliance with their instructions. This doesn’t just start when you’re face-to-face with the police however. It starts the moment sirens signal you to pull over:

Pull over promptly, and safely, in order to indicate your willingness to comply with officers’ instructions.

Do not unbuckle your seatbelt until instructed to.

Do not exit your vehicle unless instructed to.

Do not interrupt when being spoken to.

            Do not be confrontational.

Do not use your cell phone, and silence your stereo before conversing with an officer.

           2. Keep cool. No matter how much your instincts compel you to panic, don’t get carried away with fear, anger or aggression. For example:

Use a composed tone of voice when talking and be respectful.

Use polite language and don’t utter profanities.

            Maintain eye contact.

Pay attention and listen to what the officers actually say.

           3. Don’t make sudden movements. Unexpected movements on a driver’s part can be misinterpreted as an attack. Remember, the calmer you appear to an approaching officer, the less reason they have to feel defensive and subdue you.

6 Easy Tips to Ace Your Next Driving Test

Driving Tests aren’t just tests… they’re a rite of passage. They’re the one thing that stands between commuting on the bus for hours on end, or being able to come and go as you please with a quick drive down the street. This is one of the things that makes them such a nerve-wracking experience. On the surface they’re nothing more than a quick formality. In reality though, everyone taking them dreads losing out on a chance to enjoy the simple freedom of being a licensed driver.

While driving tests can be intimidating, they don’t have to be a nightmare if you get serious about preparing for them. Whether you’re a young driver, or a mature adult, the more work you put into getting ready for your test, the likelier it is to pass with flying colors. It’s important to remember that passing requires more than memorizing the Highway Code. You also have to demonstrate situational awareness at all times whenever you’re behind the wheel. Here are six responsible habits to practice in order to pass your next driving test:

          1. Don’t Panic: Keeping your wits about you is a necessary instinct when presented with unpredictable situations – and unpredictable situations can happen at any moment on the road. Remember to breathe and relax before, during and after your test.

          2. Be Fluid: No matter how much you might want to get everything over and done with, don’t rush through the test. Accelerate smoothly, brake smoothly and steer without any sudden or extreme movements.

          3. Master Your Pre-Drive Checklist: Before taking to the road during the test, learn how to do the following because you will be tested on them: locate the ignition; activate turn signals, switch on headlights; use windshield wipers; use hazard lights; locate and use defrosters; engage the emergency parking brake; honk the horn; adjust rearview mirrors.

          4. Be Alert: At all times during your test, make sure to demonstrate that you are looking out for pedestrians or other obstructions on the road. Even if the road is clear, if circumstances require you to scan your environment, don’t hesitate to do so.

          5. Obey Traffic Signs: Always heed posted speed limits, traffic lights and general signage on the road. Ignoring traffic signs and signals are an automatic way to fail a driving test. As a driver you’re expected either to know or decipher what all traffic signs mean.

          6. Stay in Your Lane: Always use the appropriate traffic lane for your movements on the road. Turn from the proper lane, merge into the proper lane, and always signal your intended lane-changes.

Every driver is unique when it comes to driving tests. Some drivers need to brush up on the technical aspects of driving, while others require more actual practice on the road. Whichever learning-style fits you best, just make sure to prepare as much as possible. After all, practice makes perfect.
4 Important things The Law Says about Using Cellphones While Driving

Where would we be without our cellphones? It’s almost impossible to imagine a life without the convenience of endless information at the swipe of a finger. There’s no denying that cellphone-use has become an integral part of people’s routines. The day just feels incomplete if you haven’t spent some time searching, streaming, posting, or liking. While there’s nothing unforgivable about being addicted to tech… using your cellphone when driving is extremely dangerous. It’s so dangerous in fact that there are multiple laws that ban the use of cellphones and other mobile devices while driving.

           Stay Focused

Using cellphones behind the wheel is wrong for one specific reason. It causes distracted driving. Simply defined, distracted driving is the act of operating a vehicle while doing things that stray concentration away from the specific task of driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), around 8 people are killed and 1,161 are injured every day as a direct result of distracted driving. This translates into thousands of deaths and injuries annually because of behavior that is completely preventable. Here are four important facts you need to know about how the law restricts cellphone use in vehicles:

          1. It’s illegal to use handheld mobile devices behind the wheel: Do not access any handheld mobile devices when driving on a public road. Where available, use hands-free accessories and options such as voice-operation on electronic devices.

          2. Young drivers have stricter rules: Drivers 18 years of age or younger are prohibited from using both handheld or hand’s-free mobile devices in cars.

          3. Passengers are off the hook: Passengers being ferried in a vehicle are free to use mobile devices while a vehicle is in motion on public roads. However if any passengers you may be transporting as a driver are unruly, don’t allow their activity to interfere with your concentration.

          4. There are exceptions: The law can forgive use of cellphones while driving if the phone call being made is to alert law enforcement or first responders about an emergency. Even under emergency situations however, be careful not to jeopardize safety in the process of trying to help.

No matter how important your reasons might be to check your phone, don’t do it if you’re driving. The decisions you make as a driver don’t just influence your own life, they also impact the lives of every driver and pedestrian around you. Even the slightest amount of negligence on your part can end up costing you, and many other innocent people, everything.
Traffic Tickets

Auto insurance rates go up when you have just one traffic violation, which can then jump another 50 percent after a few more violations.

People who purchased a single-vehicle policy by themselves saw increases of as much as 18 percent after just one violation. As you may notice, insurance penalties only become worse with multiple offenses.

On average, people who receive two violations see an increase of about 33 percent. Three violations will sky-rocket your rates to as much as 50 percent or more (Numbers are compared to good drivers).

           Popular moving violations include:

           – Tickets for speed
– D.U.I.
– Through a red light
– Through a stop sign
– Police chase
– Driving on the wrong side
– Illegal U-turn
– Child safety seats
– Illegal passing

Insurance companies higher rates if drivers continuously repeat offenses because those drivers are then seen as a higher risk. This goes to show just how much your behavior can impact your car insurance premiums.

Senior citizens have it really bad. If you’re over the age of 65 and have two violations, then you’re looking at a rate jump of around 56 percent. Drivers between the ages of 55-64 would see a 47 percent increase, which is still a lot for two tickets.

A DUI charge (or driving under the influence) can hurt your rates the most, but not all insurers have the same high rates. If your insurance is in fact raised after receiving a ticket then you can always shop around for lower rates.

Also, try and enroll yourself into a driving safety class if your insurer qualifies those who do with better rates. This isn’t recommended, but you can always increase your deductible. This will make your premium price fall; however, you are taking a risk of paying more for a claim in the event an accident actually does occur.

These days insurers are very competitive, and even if you do have three of more violations you can still shop around for rates–you’re just going to have to pay for them.

Write about something you know. If you don’t know much about a specific topic that will interest your readers, invite an expert to write about it.

    Speak to your audience

You know your audience better than anyone else, so keep them in mind as you write your blog posts. Write about things they care about. If you have a company Facebook page, look here to find topics to write about

Take a few moments to plan your post

Once you have a great idea for a post, write the first draft. Some people like to start with the title and then work on the paragraphs. Other people like to start with subtitles and go from there. Choose the method that works for you.

    Don’t forget to add images

Be sure to include a few high-quality images in your blog. Images break up the text and make it more readable. They can also convey emotions or ideas that are hard to put into words.

    Edit carefully before posting

Once you’re happy with the text, put it aside for a day or two, and then re-read it. You’ll probably find a few things you want to add, and a couple more that you want to remove. Have a friend or colleague look it over to make sure there are no mistakes. When your post is error-free, set it up in your blog and publish.
